A wedding celebration in Kotagala spiraled into a chaotic brawl after rival family factions allegedly turned on each other, then briefly united against police officers who arrived to restore order. The satirical account captures a bizarre night of family drama, village intervention, arrests, hospital visits and a court date that may become the reception’s unofficial after-party.
“To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until a severe lack of arrack do us part.”
What began with those sacred, traditional vows in Kotagala turned into a spectacular multi-faction battle royale on Tuesday evening, proving once and for all that nothing brings extended families together quite like a mutual, alcohol-induced hatred of law enforcement.
Reception Hall Descends Into Anarchy
The traditional nuptials descended into absolute anarchy at a local reception hall when an argument between the bride’s and groom’s parties escalated from aggressive finger-pointing to a full-scale, chair-throwing melee.
According to eyewitnesses, the dispute began over a highly contentious theological debate regarding who, exactly, had consumed more of the premium spirits.
Police Arrival Creates a Common Enemy
However, the event transitioned from a standard domestic disturbance into a masterclass in community engagement when two officers from the Dimbula Pathana Police arrived to restore order.
Faced with the sudden appearance of a common adversary, the warring factions immediately declared a ceasefire, successfully putting aside generations of family rivalry to unite in a coordinated assault on the arriving officers.
A Beautiful Display of Marital Compromise
“It was a beautiful display of marital compromise,” said one local resident, who wished to remain anonymous.
“The bride’s uncle and the groom’s brother-in-law were trading punches just minutes earlier, but the moment the police walked in, they seamlessly pivoted to double-team a constable. It makes you believe in the power of family.”
Villagers Enter the Wedding War
The tactical alliance between the in-laws was short-lived, however, as nearby villagers, apparently offended by the lack of respect for the uniform or perhaps just feeling excluded from the festivities, intervened to defend the police.
This third faction effectively turned the wedding reception into a chaotic, three-way territorial dispute that spilled out into the streets of Kotagala.
Multi-District Peacekeeping Force Arrives
Peace was only restored when a coalition of reinforcement units from Talawakelle, Lindula, and Nanu Oya descended upon the town like a multi-district peacekeeping force.
Following a brief tactical retreat by the remaining wedding guests into a nearby field, police successfully tracked down and apprehended eleven individuals, while three others remain at large.
Hospital Beds and Hangovers
Two police officers and three wedding guests were hospitalized at the Kotagala Divisional Hospital, where they are reportedly being treated for lacerations, bruises, and severe hangovers.
Court Date Becomes Family Reunion
The eleven suspects are currently being produced before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court on various charges, including rioting and assaulting public servants.
Legal experts note that while the marriage may face long-term challenges, the joint court appearance will at least provide both families with an excellent opportunity to coordinate their defense strategies and pick out a shared attorney.
