Eloy Room makes a record 15 saves as Curaçao hold Ecuador 0-0, earning the Caribbean nation’s historic first FIFA World Cup point.
Eloy Room made a record 15 saves as Curaçao frustrated Ecuador in a remarkable 0-0 draw, earning the Caribbean nation its first point at a FIFA World Cup.
Curaçao entered the Group E contest attempting to recover from a devastating 7-1 defeat against Germany. Ecuador were also seeking their first points after losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast.
The difference between the teams appeared clear for long periods. Ecuador dominated possession, created chance after chance and finished with 25 attempts, but they found Room in inspired form.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper produced every type of save required. He denied efforts from distance, reacted quickly to close-range attempts and repeatedly controlled dangerous situations inside a crowded penalty area.
Ecuador’s expected-goals total exceeded three, illustrating the quality and volume of the opportunities they failed to convert. Room’s performance, however, turned what could have become another heavy defeat into a historic national achievement.
His 15 saves matched the men’s World Cup record associated with Tim Howard’s performance for the United States against Belgium in 2014. Room achieved his total during regulation time and did not concede.
Curaçao’s defenders also made an important collective contribution. They protected the box, followed runners and continued throwing themselves into challenges despite Ecuador’s relentless pressure.
The emotional significance became clear after the final whistle. Room dedicated the performance to his former Curaçao teammate Jairzinho Pieter, who died in 2019 while on international duty.
Room later joked that the achievement might earn him a statue, but his display was far more than an individual statistical milestone. It gave the small Caribbean nation a result that will occupy a permanent place in its sporting history.
For Ecuador, the draw represented a major missed opportunity. Their control of the match should have produced a comfortable victory, but poor finishing and Room’s brilliance left them with only one point from two games.
The result also confirmed Germany as Group E winners. Ivory Coast remain second on three points, while Ecuador and Curaçao enter the final round with one point each.
Ecuador face Germany on June 25 and may need a victory to continue their tournament. Curaçao meet Ivory Coast at the same time, with a win potentially carrying Dick Advocaat’s team into the Round of 32.
After the scale of their opening defeat, few expected Curaçao to remain involved in the qualification race. Room’s historic night has ensured that their World Cup story will extend to the final group match with genuine hope still alive.
