Karuna Amman CID questioning reveals claims on Sallay-Pillayan ties, alleged accommodation support and a Welikanda torture camp probe.
Karuna Amman CID questioning has brought fresh attention to alleged links between former State Intelligence Director Suresh Sallay and the Pillayan faction in the Eastern Province.
The Criminal Investigation Department recorded a statement from former Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, also known as Karuna Amman, as part of investigations linked to the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
During the questioning, investigators reportedly uncovered several details about the close relationship between the Pillayan faction and Suresh Sallay. They also examined claims about joint activities involving the two sides.
CID sources said Karuna Amman provided evidence that Sallay had arranged accommodation facilities for Pillayan’s group through intermediaries. The sources also said those involved had provided the required financial support for that purpose.
Although both Karuna Amman and Pillayan belonged to a political stream that supported former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, political circles have long known about the rift between them.
Meanwhile, the CID has widened its investigation into an alleged torture camp maintained by the Pillayan faction in the Welikanda area of Polonnaruwa.
Investigators have already recorded statements from several other individuals. They are also focusing special attention on identifying those who allegedly supported the faction’s activities within Colombo city.
