The Attorney General’s Department has been exposed for delaying in providing its opinion to the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offenses Relating to Sports in order to proceed in taking legal action against Maxwell De Silva the current Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka.
Whilst addressing a letter based on pure facts on the 29th of February 2024 to the Auditor General Sanjay Rajaratnam, a pursuant complainant named M.H.Usuph stated that he is seeking the AG’s intervention in having its final instructions to be provided to the SIU to proceed in commencing legal proceedings against the perpetrator Maxwell De Silva who was investigated for embezzling state funds.
The Attorney General’s Department has now been exposed for having brushed this entire incident under the carpet for several years.
It is yet to be established if Maxwell De Silva had been using influence in having the AG’s Department suppress this incident up until now.
The current NOCSL Sec.General was found guilty at the concluded SIU investigation for pocketing US 10,000 belonging to the Ministry of Sports and subsequently returned the same only after it was identified several years later. His committed act was found to be in violation of the penal code.
Incidentally, Maxwell De Silva who has held the position of Secretary General of the NOCSL for many years along with several other Executive Committee Members are also currently being investigated by multiple bodies for embezzling funds, fraud, corruption and human smuggling.
The Morning Telegraph is in the possession of information pertaining to similar incidents, where the AG’s Department has been delaying in providing its opinion that involves several other high profile sports governing personnel.
These incidents will also be exposed shortly.
Below is the email sent by M.H.Usuph to the Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam on the 29th of February 2024.
