Kapila Chandrasena wife warrant issued as the CID seeks foreign assistance, while Aravinda de Silva asks to end his bail obligations.
The Kapila Chandrasena wife warrant was issued on Wednesday (15) as Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena ordered an open warrant for Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake.
Wijenayake is the second suspect in a large-scale financial investigation linked to SriLankan Airlines’ controversial Airbus aircraft transactions. She is the wife of the airline’s former Chief Executive Officer, Kapila Chandrasena.
The Criminal Investigation Department informed the court that Wijenayake is currently outside Sri Lanka. Investigators said the warrant was required to obtain assistance from foreign authorities, including Interpol.
However, her precise location has not been publicly disclosed. There is also no confirmed public information showing that Interpol has already issued a Red Notice against her.
The latest order follows earlier court action in the same investigation. On April 2, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court issued open warrants for Wijenayake and former SriLankan Airlines board member Shamindra Rajapaksa. The court also directed authorities to circulate those warrants to airports across Sri Lanka. A further warrant requiring Wijenayake’s immediate arrest and production before court was reported on April 22.
It remains unclear why an additional warrant was required in July. The latest order may support broader international cooperation, but the court’s complete written order would be needed to confirm the precise legal purpose.
Aravinda de Silva and Wife Seek Release as Sureties
Meanwhile, lawyers representing former Sri Lankan cricketer Aravinda de Silva and his wife, Priyangi Anushka Wijenayake, requested that the court release them from their obligations as sureties for the suspect.
President’s Counsel Anil Silva, appearing for the couple, said they urgently needed to travel abroad. He also informed the court that they were prepared to allow the confiscation of LKR 10 million in bail money.
However, Magistrate Pasan Amarasena examined the case file and clarified that the recorded bail amount was LKR 20 million, not LKR 10 million.
The Magistrate said the reasons supporting the confiscation must first be submitted to court in writing. The court then ordered the release of Aravinda de Silva and his wife from their surety obligations and directed the lawyers to file written reasons concerning the bail money.
The case is scheduled to be called again on July 22.
The unanswered questions now include when Wijenayake left Sri Lanka, which country she is in, whether authorities have requested an Interpol Red Notice, and what legal steps may be required to return her to Sri Lanka. seeks overseas cooperation.
