The Chemmani mass grave excavation uncovered a rare seated skeleton as the total number of identified human remains rose to 446.
Excavators identified Skeleton No. 429, buried in a seated position with its legs folded, during the 37th day of the third phase of the Chemmani mass grave excavation in Jaffna on Sunday (19), marking only the second such burial posture documented at the site. A similar discovery was made during the second phase of excavations last year.
The latest excavation activities were conducted under the supervision of the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court.
During Sunday’s excavation, nine additional human skeletons were cleaned and identified.
With these findings, the total number of human skeletons cleaned and identified across all three phases of the Chemmani mass grave excavation has risen to 446, while 434 skeletons have been fully excavated and recovered.
