Sri Lanka India Test in Galle draws a sparse crowd despite free entry, while India reach 101 for one at lunch on the opening day.
The Sri Lanka India Test in Galle drew a strikingly low spectator turnout on Saturday despite Sri Lanka Cricket offering free entry for the opening match.
At lunch on the first day at Galle International Cricket Stadium, India were strongly placed at 101 for one after choosing to bat first.
India won the toss and elected to bat.
Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 32 from 37 balls before losing his wicket while attempting a run.
At the lunch interval, Lokesh Rahul remained unbeaten on 32, while Devdutt Padikkal was not out on 35.
India reached 101 for one after 27 overs, maintaining a run rate of 3.74 runs per over.
Sri Lanka India Test Sees Sparse Crowd
However, the most notable sight away from the action was the extremely low spectator presence inside the stadium.
Several sections of the Galle International Cricket Stadium appeared almost completely empty. In some stands, not a single spectator was visible.
The turnout was particularly notable because Sri Lanka Cricket had offered free admission in an effort to attract more supporters.
Despite the importance of the contest between Sri Lanka and India, the limited attendance therefore emerged as one of the most striking features of the opening session.
