- Sri Lanka’s Tour of Bangladesh 2024 (1st ODI)
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front and spanked a stellar unbeaten knock of 122 runs to lead his team to a somewhat comfortable 6 wicket win over Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI played in Chittagong on Tuesday.
Bangladesh chased down the target of 256 with ease, registering the win with 32 balls to spare.
The Sri Lankan openers Avishka Gunawardena and Pathum Nissanka gave Sri Lanka a solid start by putting on 71 runs inside the first ten overs. Thereafter despite registering two fighting half-centuries from Janith Liyanage and captain Kusal Mendis, the visitors kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to capitalize on their early momentum.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 255 runs, courtesy of a disciplined bowling performance from the Bangladeshi trio of Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Shoriful Islam, and Taskin Ahmed, who shared nine wickets between themselves.
Facing a challenging yet achievable target, Bangladesh stumbled early, losing three wickets with just 23 runs on the board.
However, a remarkable 69 run partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudullah stabilized the innings, before Mushfiqur Rahim who remained unbeaten on 73 joined his skipper Shanto in stitching together an unbroken 165 run stand to take their side eventually to a win with relative ease.
