Buonavista College principal remanded until September 15 after CIABOC officers arrested him over alleged school admission bribes.
GALLE, Sri Lanka – The Buonavista College principal has been remanded until September 15 after authorities arrested him over alleged bribes linked to school admissions.
The principal appeared before the Galle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, according to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
Investigators allege that the principal initially demanded Rs. 600,000 from a family, charging Rs. 300,000 for each child. He later allegedly reduced the total payment to Rs. 300,000.
The Buonavista College principal allegedly accepted Rs. 150,000 upfront to admit one child to Grade 1 for the 2026 school year. Investigators say he then collected another Rs. 50,000 to admit the second child to Grade 8.
Buonavista College Principal Allegedly Demanded More Cash
According to anti-graft officials, the principal later demanded another Rs. 250,000 to complete the admissions process.
Officials allege that he threatened to remove both children from the school if the family failed to make the additional payment.
CIABOC officers arrested the principal at an eatery in Galle on Monday while he was allegedly attempting to collect the final Rs. 250,000 payment.
