Several explosions were heard on Iran’s Qeshm Island, strategically located in the Strait of Hormuz, with local sources saying the sounds appeared to come from the direction of the sea.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported the explosions, citing local sources.
There was no immediate official explanation for what caused them or confirmation of any casualties or damage.
The incident comes during heightened military tension in and around one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
Cause of Explosions Remains Unknown
Initial Iranian reports provided few details beyond the location and apparent direction of the sounds.
No authority immediately announced that Qeshm Island itself had been struck.
There was also no immediate confirmation linking the explosions to US, Iranian or other military forces.
Until further information emerges, the cause therefore remains undetermined.
Qeshm Sits Beside Critical Shipping Route
Qeshm Island lies inside the Strait of Hormuz near Iran’s southern coastline.
The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is a strategically important route for global oil and gas exports.
That location gives even unconfirmed security incidents around Qeshm wider international significance.
The region has already experienced a series of military and maritime incidents during the current escalation.
Previous Vessel Incident Near Qeshm
Days earlier, an Iranian cargo vessel was struck near Qeshm Island, killing one person and injuring several others, according to Iranian state media cited by the Associated Press.
Iranian authorities blamed what they described as a hostile actor, although responsibility was not independently established.
Separately, Axios reported that US forces destroyed two Iranian small boats after American officials said the vessels attempted to seize a US Navy unmanned surface vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
Those incidents illustrate the level of military activity surrounding the waterway but do not establish the cause of the latest explosions on Qeshm.
Iranian authorities are expected to provide further details if the source of the blasts is identified.
Until then, reports that the sounds originated from the sea remain preliminary accounts from local sources carried by Iran’s official news agency.
