Water levels in several major rivers and reservoirs across Sri Lanka are gradually returning towards normal after rising during recent rainfall, according to the Irrigation Department.
Water levels in several Sri Lankan rivers that rose following recent heavy rainfall are gradually receding, according to the Department of Irrigation.
Despite the improvement, several monitoring stations remain at minor flood levels, meaning residents in vulnerable low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious.
The Kuda Ganga at Millakanda, the Gin Ganga at Baddegama and the Nilwala Ganga at Thalgahagoda continue to record minor flood conditions, according to the latest available Irrigation Department information.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Nilwala Ganga at Panadugama, which had previously reached alert level, is also declining.
The easing comes after several days of heavy rainfall across parts of the country pushed river levels higher and raised concerns over flooding.
Earlier monitoring showed elevated water levels in several major river basins, including the Kelani, Gin, Nilwala and Kalu rivers, following significant rainfall in their catchment areas.
Although conditions are improving, authorities continue to monitor river levels as further rainfall remains possible in parts of the island.
Residents living near rivers, canals and other flood-prone areas have been urged to follow official warnings and avoid entering swollen waterways.
