A Werahera couple has been arrested over fake driving licences after police traced an alleged forgery racket operating for about 18 months.
COLOMBO – A husband and wife were arrested by authorities on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in the Werahera Janata Mawatha area for allegedly operating a racket that produced and sold fake temporary driving licences.
According to police reports, the operation came to light following an initial investigation involving an individual who was found in possession of a counterfeit temporary driving licence.
Acting on information obtained during the initial investigation, officers from the Mount Lavinia Crimes Investigation Bureau conducted a targeted raid in Werahera, leading to the couple’s arrest. One fake temporary driving licence was seized during the operation.
The suspects have been identified as a 49-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, both residents of Janata Mawatha, Werahera.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the couple had allegedly been operating the illegal business for approximately a year and a half, manufacturing and selling forged temporary driving licences for money.
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police Station, which is conducting further investigations into the alleged network.
