DUBLIN, October 31, 2026 — Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara alleges that a Ryanair employee made discriminatory remarks about his family’s Sri Lankan passports and threatened to deny them boarding. The airline disputes his account.
Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has accused a Ryanair ground staff member of racist and threatening behaviour during a boarding dispute at Dublin Airport, alleging that he and his family were subjected to humiliating treatment because they held Sri Lankan passports.
The incident occurred on October 28 as Sangakkara, his wife and their two children prepared to return to Bristol after a two-day visit to Ireland.
According to Sangakkara, an airline employee demanded that the family produce evidence of their United Kingdom immigration status at the boarding gate, despite earlier assurances from Ryanair staff that their travel documents had already been accepted.
He alleges that the employee threatened to prevent the family from boarding when he requested additional time to access their electronic visas.
Ryanair has rejected his account of the documentation dispute, maintaining that Sangakkara initially refused to present the necessary visa documents when requested.
Both parties acknowledge that the family’s immigration status was eventually verified and that they travelled on the scheduled flight.
The disagreement has attracted widespread attention, with prominent sports personalities, media figures and social media users responding to Sangakkara’s allegations.
Sangakkara Raises Allegations on Social Media
Sangakkara first brought the incident to public attention through a post on X on October 28.
Describing the experience as shocking, he questioned whether other passengers had encountered discriminatory conduct from Ryanair ground staff at Dublin Airport.
His complaint concerned the manner in which his family was addressed, the handling of the boarding procedure and what he described as threatening behaviour.
The post attracted nearly four million views, prompting considerable debate about immigration-document checks, airline customer service and the treatment of travellers holding passports from different countries.
Some users expressed sympathy and recounted similar experiences, while others questioned whether the incident involved discrimination or the enforcement of standard airline procedures.
One respondent suggested that equal treatment could sometimes be perceived as unfair by passengers accustomed to preferential service.
Sangakkara rejected that interpretation.
In his response, he alleged that an employee had told the family that people holding passports like theirs should expect such treatment and had threatened to classify them as a danger to other passengers if they challenged the remark.
He maintained that the issue was not an objection to producing immigration documents but the language and conduct allegedly directed towards his family.
How the Dispute Began
Speaking in a subsequent telephone interview, Sangakkara provided a detailed account of the family’s journey and the sequence of events leading to the confrontation.
He explained that they had travelled from Bristol to Dublin for a short visit and had obtained the necessary Irish visas without difficulty.
He spoke positively about Ireland and the people they encountered during their stay, making clear that his complaint concerned the conduct of a particular airline employee rather than the country or its people.
Sangakkara said the family hold Sri Lankan passports and have UK immigration permission recorded electronically.
Under the UK’s eVisa system, passengers can access their immigration status online and, where required, generate a share code allowing an authorised party to verify their right to enter the country.
According to Sangakkara, the family completed Ryanair’s online check-in process and uploaded all four passports through the airline’s application.
The system subsequently issued boarding passes, indicating that the preliminary documentation process had been completed.
Nevertheless, the family approached Ryanair’s visa-checking desk at Dublin Airport to confirm whether any further verification was necessary.
Sangakkara said he specifically informed staff that they were travelling on Sri Lankan passports, held UK eVisas and had already received boarding passes.
He maintains that the employees told him there was nothing further to check and that the family could proceed through security and board their flight.
The confrontation allegedly arose later, at the boarding gate.
A Request for Time to Access Four eVisas
Sangakkara said the family’s boarding passes had already been scanned when a gate employee informed them that their visas required another check.
He did not object to the request, according to his account, but explained that accessing the electronic immigration records of four travellers would take several minutes.
The process required logging into the UK immigration system, retrieving the necessary information and obtaining verification codes.
Sangakkara said the children’s verification codes were sent to his mobile telephone, meaning that the records had to be accessed individually.
He also explained that the family had previously been told at Ryanair’s visa desk that no additional checks were required.
According to Sangakkara, the employee reacted impatiently and demanded that he complete the verification immediately.
He alleges that she threatened to prevent them from boarding if the process was not completed quickly.
When he explained the conflicting instructions received from airline personnel, the employee reportedly directed the family to step aside and indicated that boarding was closing.
Sangakkara said the situation deteriorated when she made a remark about passengers holding passports like theirs.
He described the statement as racist and deeply offensive.
His wife also challenged the remark, telling the employee that it was insulting.
Sangakkara maintains that neither he nor his family refused to provide the necessary documentation.
Their request, he said, was simply for sufficient time to access the electronic records they were being asked to produce.
Not recognising someone’s status is just neutrality.
A wise man once said, when people get used to preferential treatment, equal treatment feels like discrimination.
Ryanair don’t promise frills.
Alleged Threat to Deny Boarding
According to Sangakkara, the employee subsequently accused him of being argumentative and aggressive.
He alleges that she threatened to regard him as a danger to other passengers and withdraw permission for the family to board.
His wife reportedly attempted to calm the situation, explaining that they had enjoyed their visit to Dublin and had been treated courteously by others throughout their stay.
Sangakkara also asked for the employee’s name so that he could submit a formal complaint.
He alleges that she declined to identify herself and repeated that further argument could result in the family’s boarding permission being withdrawn.
Eventually, Sangakkara and his family accessed their immigration records and presented the requested information.
Their eligibility to travel was confirmed, and they were permitted to board the Dublin-to-Bristol flight.
Sangakkara subsequently submitted an online complaint to Ryanair concerning the incident.
He has consistently maintained that he was willing to comply with the immigration-document requirements and that his objection concerned the way the family was treated.
Ryanair Rejects Sangakkara’s Account
Ryanair has disputed the former captain’s description of the encounter.
In its response to media inquiries, the airline stated that Sangakkara had declined to present the required visa documentation when requested by an employee carrying out mandatory immigration checks.
The company confirmed that the checks were eventually completed, the passenger’s eligibility to travel was established and the family boarded the scheduled flight on October 28.
Sangakkara strongly rejected the suggestion that he had refused to produce the documents.
He insisted that his account had been misunderstood and that he had never objected to showing evidence of his immigration status.
The central disagreement therefore concerns whether Sangakkara refused to comply with a legitimate documentation request or merely requested additional time to fulfil it.
Ryanair’s reported response addressed the documentation-check dispute but did not substantively address the specific discriminatory remarks Sangakkara alleges were made.
No independent finding establishing the alleged remarks or discriminatory conduct has been reported.
What Do the Immigration Rules Require?
The disagreement has also highlighted the practical difficulties that can arise when airlines verify electronic immigration records.
The UK government’s eVisa system allows travellers to demonstrate their immigration status digitally, replacing many traditional physical immigration documents.
Passengers must ensure that their immigration details are accurate and linked to their current passports.
Airlines may verify immigration permission electronically, but travellers can also be asked to produce additional evidence, including a share code.
A UK immigration-status share code is normally valid for 90 days and may be generated before travelling.
Official guidance also explains that airlines retain responsibility for deciding whether passengers can board, in accordance with their own procedures and immigration-related obligations.
Ryanair’s published conditions require non-EU and non-EEA passengers to complete applicable visa or residence-permit verification procedures.
These requirements establish why an airline may request additional documentation, but they do not resolve the separate allegation that a staff member behaved in a discriminatory or threatening manner.
Equally, the fact that a passenger has obtained an electronic boarding pass does not necessarily mean that an airline cannot undertake further immigration checks before departure.
Cricket and Media Figures Respond
Sangakkara’s allegations prompted reactions from several prominent personalities, including former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews and British broadcaster Piers Morgan.
Mathews expressed concern about what he regarded as the increasingly open expression of racist attitudes.
Morgan publicly supported Sangakkara, describing him as an exceptionally courteous and dignified individual and urging Ryanair to investigate the complaint appropriately.
Sri Lankan businessman Sanjeewa Weerawarna also responded by describing his own experiences of discrimination while living and travelling in Western countries.
Other social media users shared accounts of what they believed were similar experiences involving airlines and immigration procedures.
Some expressed frustration at the treatment reportedly encountered by travellers holding South Asian passports.
Others argued that airlines must be permitted to conduct rigorous immigration checks regardless of a passenger’s public profile.
The discussion has extended beyond the individual incident to broader questions concerning respectful customer service, consistent immigration procedures and how airlines respond when passengers raise complaints about possible discrimination.
Ryanair Faces Social Media Criticism
Criticism of Ryanair subsequently spread across social media platforms, including the company’s Facebook page.
A separate promotional post depicting a lion receiving a haircut attracted thousands of comments, many reportedly from Sri Lankan users referencing Sangakkara’s experience.
The post itself was not established to be connected to the boarding dispute.
Nevertheless, the reaction illustrated how rapidly complaints involving internationally recognised public figures can influence online discussion about a company’s customer service.
Some users threatened to avoid travelling with Ryanair, while others demanded an explanation or apology.
The volume of comments does not establish the accuracy of the allegations, but it demonstrates the considerable public attention surrounding the dispute.
Ryanair is one of Europe’s largest airline groups, carrying approximately 214 million passengers annually across a network of more than 220 airports in 35 countries.
Its operations involve extensive passenger-document verification requirements, particularly on international routes.
Complaint Awaits Further Resolution
Sangakkara, who represented Sri Lanka internationally for approximately 15 years before retiring in 2015, remains one of the country’s most internationally recognised sporting figures.
Inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2021, he has continued working in professional cricket following his playing career.
His public complaint has brought attention to an issue affecting many international travellers: the difference between an airline’s legitimate responsibility to verify immigration documents and its obligation to treat passengers respectfully.
Both Sangakkara and Ryanair agree that the family’s documentation was ultimately verified and that they were permitted to travel.
What remains disputed is the conduct of the gate employee, the circumstances surrounding the request for additional documentation and the alleged remarks concerning the family’s Sri Lankan passports.
The matter now rests with Ryanair’s handling of Sangakkara’s formal complaint and any further evidence or explanation that emerges from the airline’s review.
