Bangladesh has erupted in celebration following the resignation and escape of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country and reportedly arrived in India. Her departure comes after weeks of intense anti-government protests that have resulted in widespread violence and upheaval.
The protests, which began over a contentious quota system for government jobs, turned into a broader movement against Hasina’s long-standing rule. On Monday, the streets of Dhaka were filled with jubilant crowds celebrating her resignation. Demonstrators stormed her former residence, with reports of looting and vandalism.
In response to the turmoil, President Mohammed Shahabuddin has announced the formation of an interim government, the release of jailed opposition leaders, and new elections. The interim government has also lifted the nationwide curfew and vowed to address the issues raised by the protests.
Violence continued throughout the day as protesters attacked police and government buildings, with some attempting to tear down a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father. Casualty figures vary, with reports indicating between 66 and 135 deaths.
The international community has reacted with concern. The U.S. has commended the army for its restraint and called for a smooth transition to a new government, while the EU has urged an orderly and peaceful process. There has been no official comment from India regarding Hasina’s departure.
Economist Debapriya Bhattacharya has warned of escalating violence against the Hindu minority and the potential for further instability in the wake of Hasina’s exit. Critics of Hasina’s rule cite allegations of forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and suppression of dissent, while her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, defended her legacy, highlighting her role in transforming Bangladesh’s economy.
The recent unrest underscores deep-seated frustrations with high unemployment and the quota system, which has intensified calls for democratic reforms and improvements in public services. The new interim government will face significant challenges as it navigates the path toward stabilization and reform.
