Puttalam, Sri Lanka – A. Mohammed Ilyas, an independent candidate contesting the 2024 Presidential Election, has passed away at the age of 78. He reportedly died while receiving treatment at the Puttalam Hospital on the night of August 22, following a sudden illness.
Mohammed Ilyas was a seasoned politician who had previously served as a Member of Parliament during the government of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. His political career spanned several decades, and he had been a notable figure in Sri Lankan politics.
Ilyas had submitted his nomination on August 15 to contest the upcoming presidential election. This was to be his fourth time running for the presidency, having previously been a candidate in the 2010, 2015, and 2019 elections.
