Colombo – The Colombo District Court today (Sept. 5) issued a 14-day injunction preventing the publication of a defamatory statement made by Member of Parliament Dayasiri Jayasekara against Velu Kumar, who recently defected from the Samagi Jana Balavega (SJB) to join the government. The statement in question was made during a public meeting held in Akurassa yesterday.
Velu Kumar filed a complaint with the court, claiming that Jayasekara’s comments caused significant damage to his reputation. He is seeking Rs. 500 million in compensation from Jayasekara.
The injunction specifically prohibits the dissemination of the statement on Jayasekara’s Facebook page, as well as the official page of the SJB. The court order will remain in effect for 14 days while the case proceeds.
This legal action highlights the ongoing tensions within political circles, as Velu Kumar’s shift from the opposition SJB to the government has attracted significant public and political attention.
