Sabaragamuwa University Medical Faculty opens in Ratnapura with modern facilities, student housing and major Sri Lankan-Saudi funding.
The Sabaragamuwa University Medical Faculty has officially opened its newly constructed complex, marking a significant milestone for medical education and the university community.
The official ceremony to hand over the new facility to students took place yesterday (04) under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. The modern complex will serve future generations of medical students while expanding the university’s capacity for medical education.
The Sabaragamuwa University Medical Faculty stands on a sprawling 20-acre site centred around the new town of Ratnapura. Nearly 750 medical students currently pursue their higher education through the faculty.
Meanwhile, the university has also taken steps to admit another 162 medical students for the current academic year. The additional intake will further expand the number of students receiving medical education through the facility.
The project also reflects growing bilateral cooperation between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. The two governments jointly financed the construction of the large-scale medical faculty project.
The Sri Lankan government invested Rs. 1,096 million in the development. Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provided a financial contribution of US$50 million towards the project.
The newly opened Sabaragamuwa University Medical Faculty complex includes modern academic and student facilities. It also features a comfortable hostel system capable of accommodating 500 students at one time.
In addition, the complex includes a state-of-the-art auditorium with seating for 1,060 people. The auditorium will support university events, academic programmes and other activities.
With its expanded teaching facilities, accommodation and large auditorium, the new complex represents a major addition to the university’s infrastructure and future medical education capacity.
