Spa King extortion case in Kaduwela exposes alleged blackmail, fake police raids, hidden cameras, and millions in payments.
The Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court remanded a high-profile suspect, dubbed the local “Spa King,” after multi-jurisdictional police raids dismantled an illegal blackmail network operating across Colombo’s suburban belt. According to police filings submitted to the magistrate, the suspect established a string of semi-licensed wellness clinics and massage centers throughout Battaramulla, Thalawathugoda, and Kaduwela. Under the guise of traditional Ayurvedic operations, the network systematically targeted high-profile clients, corporate executives, and local business owners using covert recording equipment and staged police raids.
Prosecutors submitted bank statements detailing millions of rupees in online transfers from a local businessman who had been targeted with secretly recorded footage and threatened with its public release unless recurring monthly payments were made. In addition, accomplices posing as undercover vice officers allegedly staged fake raids on patrons inside treatment rooms, demanding immediate cash payments to drop charges and conceal purported arrests. Following the seizure of miniature cameras, storage arrays, and uncertified medical equipment across several branches, law enforcement also charged the operator with privacy violations and illegal business operations. The Kaduwela Magistrate denied bail due to concerns over witness tampering and ordered the Computer Crime Investigation Division to complete its forensic extraction of the seized hard drives.
The heavy wooden door of the lotus-themed wellness center in Thalawathugoda swung open, releasing a thick haze of lemongrass scent into the humid evening air. To passersby on the busy suburban stretch, it looked like any of the dozens of traditional Ayurvedic retreats lining the route between Kaduwela and Battaramulla. Behind the brass-embossed entrance, however, a carefully orchestrated apparatus was hard at work.
He was known across the district simply as the “Spa King”—a man whose influence had quietly expanded across a dozen rented commercial properties in Colombo’s suburbs. On paper, his operations offered relaxing therapies, herbal steams, and authentic oils. In reality, the massage rooms were engineered as recording studios. High-definition miniature cameras nestled behind decorative wall art, carved wooden screens, and air-conditioning vents, quietly tracking every guest who walked through the door.
For months, the operation ran like clockwork. A target—often a prominent local entrepreneur or senior corporate officer—would schedule a routine appointment. Days later, a masked phone call would arrive. The voice on the line was cold, professional, and precise, demanding that specific amounts running into millions of rupees be wired into unlinked accounts. If a client hesitated or questioned the demand, a short video clip delivered directly to their personal phone ensured immediate compliance.
When direct blackmail fell short, the syndicate deployed an even bolder tactic: the staged raid. Mid-session, heavy boots would echo down the tiled corridor as men carrying forged badges and dressed in civilian jackets burst into the rooms. Posing as undercover officers from a regional vice squad, they would threaten immediate arrest, handcuffing, and public exposure, while offering a quick “on-site settlement” to make the case disappear. Shaken victims readily emptied their wallets and transferred cash on the spot, eager to escape what appeared to be imminent public humiliation.
The syndicate’s dominance began to crack when a targeted merchant refused to comply with a third consecutive monthly payment demand. Instead of submitting, the business owner quietly approached regional crime division investigators with bank transfer slips and saved call recordings. Discreet surveillance teams spent weeks following the money trail, mapping the network’s financial footprint across private accounts, and analyzing mobile tower data across the Western Province.
The end came swiftly in a coordinated midnight sweep. Police vans converged simultaneously on multiple branches across Battaramulla and Kaduwela, seizing server racks, hidden recording hardware, encrypted hard drives, and piles of uncertified medical equipment. By dawn, the “Spa King” was in handcuffs, his suburban empire dismantled in a matter of hours.
Days later, the tension shifted to the packed corridors of the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court. As the suspect stood silently in the dock under heavy guard, police prosecutors presented three case files outlining allegations of systematic extortion, criminal impersonation of law enforcement officers, and widespread illegal surveillance. Citing the grave risk of witness intimidation and the massive volume of digital evidence still undergoing forensic extraction, the magistrate denied bail, remanding the operator into custody as investigators worked to uncover the full extent of the network.
