The Supreme Court has overturned the Election Commission’s decision to suspend the activities of the Ceylon National Party, formerly known as “Sinhala Ravaya,” allowing the party to participate in this year’s general election. The decision came after the party’s general secretary, Salika Perera, filed a petition challenging the suspension.
The case was heard by a Supreme Court bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Murdu Fernando and Justices Dilip Nawaz and Janak De Silva. The petition listed the Election Commission and other relevant parties as respondents.
The Election Commission had initially suspended the party’s activities due to a dispute between the party chairman, Akmeemana Dayaratana Thero, and the executive committee. The petitioner argued that the decision was unlawful and would unfairly prevent the party from contesting the upcoming general election.
After reviewing the petition, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Ceylon National Party, allowing it to proceed with election preparations. Advocate Hafeel Faris represented the petitioner, while Deputy Solicitor General Euresha de Silva appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
