Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath announced the arrest of six individuals, including a Maldivian national, in connection with security threats targeting tourists in the Arugambay area. The arrests were made following intelligence reports indicating a potential attack, as well as suspicious activities related to the photographing of significant financial centers in Colombo.
Minister Herath stated, “So far we have arrested six people. A Maldivian national and five Sri Lankans are in custody. Investigations are underway. However, we cannot yet say what kind of plan or effort this is, as such conclusions cannot be drawn from the information gathered from the six arrested individuals. Therefore, we urge the public to avoid unnecessary misinterpretations.”
The authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the nature and scope of the threats and ensure the safety of both locals and tourists in the region. The swift action taken by law enforcement reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining security in popular tourist destinations, particularly in light of recent incidents that could potentially jeopardize the safety of visitors.
