President Anura Kumara Dissanayake warned that failure by the current government to fulfil the expectations of the people, as expressed in the last mandate, could lead to the public abandoning hope for a brighter future. He urged state officials to commit themselves to creating a system that aligns with the people’s aspirations.
The President made these remarks while addressing the staff of the Ministry of Financial Planning and Economic Development after assuming duties as its Minister on November 22.
Upon his arrival, the President was warmly welcomed by the Ministry staff, reflecting their acknowledgment of the leadership he has brought during Sri Lanka’s recent economic challenges. He expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s vital role in steering the country away from economic collapse and emphasized the importance of collective support in achieving future goals.
During his speech, the President stressed the need for a paradigm shift in how public officials are evaluated. Historically, public officials were judged based on preconceived reputations during political transitions. However, the President asserted that under the current administration, their merit would be measured solely by their contributions. He also promised to stand up against any injustice or wrongdoing targeting public officials who perform their duties responsibly.
Acknowledging public distrust in revenue-generating departments, the President admitted that changing this perception would be a challenge. However, he noted that this government provides an opportunity to rebuild trust through genuine reform and transparency.
President Dissanayake further clarified his administration’s policy towards governance, emphasizing respect for the opinions of officials and rejecting the practice of publicly humiliating them. Instead, he called for a governance culture rooted in self-discipline, accountability, and mutual respect, inviting all public officials to embrace this transformative vision.
Several high-ranking officials attended the event, including Deputy Ministers Professor Anil Jayantha Fernando and Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, and Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Mahinda Siriwardena, alongside other senior Ministry officials.
The President’s speech reflects his administration’s broader commitment to fostering a transparent and accountable government that prioritizes public welfare while encouraging active participation from state officials to rebuild the nation’s trust and future.
