The Lanka Electricity Employees Union, a trade union movement affiliated with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has formally requested the Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to provide Christmas bonuses to employees before the upcoming holiday season.
The union emphasized that the previous administration had failed to disburse bonuses over the last two years, and as a result, it is urging the new government to rectify this oversight and grant the bonuses by December 10, in time for the Christmas festivities.
According to sources within the CEB, the bonuses will vary depending on the role and seniority of the employee. Ordinary employees are expected to receive bonuses ranging from 75,000 to 200,000 rupees. Meanwhile, engineers are likely to receive bonuses of around 250,000 rupees, and top executives, including general managers, could see bonuses as high as 900,000 rupees.
Ranjan Jayalal, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Board Employees’ Union, stated, “The Electricity Board is no longer a loss-making institution. It is currently profitable, which means there is no reason why employees should not receive a Christmas bonus. We have formally requested the Chairman of the CEB to ensure that the bonuses, which were previously stopped, are reinstated under the new government.”
This request for Christmas bonuses comes as the CEB continues to recover from past financial difficulties, and as the union underscores the importance of rewarding employees for their contributions in helping the organization return to profitability.
