The Department of Irrigation has announced that nine major rivers in Sri Lanka have reached flood levels due to continuous heavy rainfall. These rivers include the Kelani, Nilwala, Mahaweli, Yan Oya, Ma Oya, Malwathu Oya, Deduru Oya, Maha Oya, and Attanagalu Oya.
The Kelani River is currently at minor flood levels in Galanikros and Holombuwa, with the situation worsening as water levels continue to rise. The Nilwala River has reached minor flood levels in the Thalgahagoda area, while the Mahaweli River has swelled in Manampitiya and Peradeniya. Similarly, the Yan Oya is rising dangerously near Horowpathana, and the Ma Oya is at flood level near Yaka Wewa.
Malwathu Oya is showing signs of flooding in Thanthirimale, and Deduru Oya has reached flood status near Moragas Wewa. Attanagalu Oya has also overflowed in the Dunamale region.
Officials warn that the rainfall is expected to continue, which may lead to further flooding and potential displacement in these areas. Residents living near the riverbanks are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The Irrigation Department is closely monitoring the situation and has advised local authorities to be on high alert for possible emergency evacuations.
