Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Krishantha Abeysena, announced that while fuel prices have seen an increase, the rise has not been as significant as perceived. Speaking to the media, the minister assured that measures to regulate fuel prices will be clearly outlined in the upcoming national budget, scheduled to be presented in Parliament on January 9, 2025.
“The increase in fuel prices has been moderate, and we are taking necessary steps to ensure that they remain under control,” said Prof. Abeysena. He emphasized that the government is committed to easing the financial burden on citizens, and the January budget will specify the mechanisms for price control and tax reductions on fuel.
The minister further noted that the upcoming budget proposal for 2025 will include strategies not only to stabilize fuel prices but also to address broader economic challenges through fiscal adjustments. “The budget will detail how we plan to implement price controls and reduce taxes, ensuring that essential commodities remain affordable for the public,” he added.
The announcement comes amid growing public concern over the rising cost of living, with fuel prices being a critical factor influencing transportation and commodity prices. Prof. Abeysena assured that the government remains focused on mitigating the impact of global market fluctuations on domestic fuel prices and maintaining economic stability in the coming year.
