A contempt of court petition filed against former MP Hirunika Premachandra was concluded yesterday in the Court of Appeal with the decision that she would withdraw the defamatory statement she allegedly made regarding an ongoing case at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
Premachandra also provided an undertaking to the court, promising not to make any further public statements about the case that is still pending before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
The complaint was filed by Hadi Jamaldin, the son of former Uva Provincial Governor Mohamed Muzammil, who accused Premachandra of committing contempt of court through comments made during a media briefing. These comments were related to an order issued by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court concerning a case involving the assault of a woman.
Attorney-at-Law Nishan Premathirathna, representing the petitioner, confirmed that he had no objection to the resolution and that the trial could now be concluded. This marks the end of the legal proceedings concerning the defamatory statement, with Premachandra agreeing to comply with the court’s directives.
