The renovated Matale Nandimithra Ekanayake International Artificial Hockey Stadium officially opened on December 5, offering a state-of-the-art facility for hockey enthusiasts. The renovation, costing Rs. 210 million, was funded by Sri Lanka Cricket with Rs. 110 million, while the Asian Hockey Federation and the Ministry of Sports each contributed Rs. 50 million.
The newly upgraded stadium boasts a modern artificial hockey pitch, carefully constructed to meet international standards, ensuring it is fit for hosting regional and international competitions. The renovation is part of an ongoing effort to improve sports infrastructure across the country and promote hockey as a sport in Sri Lanka.
In a notable departure from tradition, the opening ceremony was intentionally held without political figures or special guests. The event was designed to focus on the community aspect, symbolized by an All-Ceylon Under-16 Boys and Girls Schools Hockey Tournament, which marked the stadium’s official handover to the public.
Organizers of the event expressed their hopes that the newly renovated venue will provide a much-needed boost to local youth hockey, offering players access to world-class facilities and the opportunity to hone their skills. The tournament featured teams from across the country and provided an exciting showcase of young talent.
With the stadium now open for public use, it is expected to play a key role in the development of hockey in Sri Lanka, helping to nurture future generations of athletes and fostering greater participation in the sport at the grassroots level.
