On the 25th anniversary of the devastating bomb attack that cost her an eye and nearly took her life, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga made a generous donation of essential medicines to the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama. The donation was made in honor of the lives lost and altered by the attack, a defining moment in her life that she has turned into an opportunity to give back to society.
Accompanied by the family members of her security guard, who died in the 1999 bomb blast, Kumaratunga visited the hospital, reflecting on the tragedy and expressing gratitude for the support she received throughout her recovery. The medicines were donated to the Indira Cancer Trust, a charitable initiative run by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and his wife Dr. Lanka Jayasuriya, aimed at providing crucial support for cancer patients, especially children.
The Apeksha Cancer Hospital, renowned for its comprehensive care, provides a variety of services, including inpatient and outpatient care, nutritional support, and counseling for families. The six-story complex is particularly noted for its patient-friendly environment, offering comfort and care beyond just medical treatment. In addition to medical services, the hospital also provides toys, educational materials, and even bus fare assistance for families who face financial hardships.
Kumaratunga spoke highly of the hospital’s mission, emphasizing its significance as a place of refuge and healing. She pointed out how the institution goes above and beyond by creating a supportive environment not just for the patients but for their families as well. Her donation underscores her commitment to healthcare, particularly cancer treatment, a cause close to her heart.
Reflecting on the quarter-century since the attack, which also targeted her family and led to the death of several others, Kumaratunga said the gesture was part of her ongoing effort to turn tragedy into positive action. She noted that the hospital remains a vital institution for those in need, adding that her actions were meant to inspire others to contribute to such causes.
Her donation to the Apeksha Cancer Hospital represents both a tribute to the memory of her late security guard and a broader message of resilience and hope for cancer patients and their families. Kumaratunga’s act of kindness serves as a reminder that even in the face of personal adversity, one can continue to serve the greater good.
