Death row inmate Duminda Silva has been readmitted to the Prisons Hospital following a series of health complications, according to the Prisons Department. Silva, who had been receiving treatment at the Prisons Hospital since his sentencing, was transferred to the general ward at Welikada Prison on January 10. However, a sudden deterioration in his condition prompted his immediate transfer to the National Hospital in Colombo for emergency medical care.
Silva’s prolonged medical treatment has drawn significant attention. He was initially admitted to the Prisons Hospital based on recommendations from a specialist at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, citing health concerns that required monitored care. In light of Silva’s ongoing medical needs, the Commissioner General of Prisons formally requested guidance from the Director General of Health Services regarding the necessity of continued treatment.
In response, a specialized medical board consisting of 18 experts from various fields was appointed to assess Silva’s condition. After a thorough review, the medical team concluded that Silva did not require extended treatment at the Prisons Hospital or any other facility, unless in the event of an emergency. Despite these findings, the medical team advised that Silva should receive immediate attention if any complications arose.
Prisons Spokesman Gamini Dissanayake explained that Silva’s recent admission to the National Hospital was based on the recommendation of the Prisons Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, following an unexpected medical episode at Welikada. Silva underwent treatment at the National Hospital before being transferred back to the Prisons Hospital on Sunday, where he remains under observation.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Prisons Hospital has recommended continued care at the facility, citing the need for regular monitoring of Silva’s condition. Authorities have confirmed that Silva is currently receiving treatment as a resident patient, and his condition is being closely monitored. Further updates on his health status and treatment plan are expected to be released on January 15.
Silva’s medical situation has sparked public debate, with some questioning the frequent transfers between hospitals and the quality of care afforded to high-profile inmates. However, prison authorities have assured that all decisions are being made in accordance with medical advice and national regulations to ensure Silva receives appropriate care.
