Former MP Wasantha Yapa Bandara has publicly questioned Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage on his claim that every household would be able to purchase a Japanese Vitz car for Rs. 1.2 million following the upcoming budget.
Speaking at a media conference in Kandy, Bandara reminded the public that Hewage had made this promise during the election campaign, which played a role in securing votes for the National People’s Power.
“In early November last year, Nalin Hewage assured voters that a Japanese Vitz could be imported for Rs. 1.2 million, making it accessible to all households. But where is that promise now?” Bandara asked.
He alleged that while the vehicles could technically be imported at that price, exorbitant government taxes—amounting to Rs. 7.8 million—were the real barrier preventing ordinary citizens from buying cars.
Bandara accused corrupt leaders of inflating vehicle prices and failing to deliver on promises of affordability, leaving the public burdened by high costs.
