Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva has boldly declared that all barriers to rebuilding the country have now been removed signaling a new era of aggressive implementation of the government’s national agenda.
Speaking to the media following the conclusion of local government elections, Silva said that the long-standing delay in establishing local government bodies had hampered progress, but that chapter has now closed.
“Until now, the issue was the delay in setting up local authorities we wanted that resolved quickly. With this election, the path is clear. Now our job is to push forward with the government’s planned work,” Silva said.
He pointed to the ambitious “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative as a major priority, emphasizing that local councils will now serve as vital tools in cleaning, organizing, and instilling discipline across the country.
“We’ve already begun efforts to eliminate rural poverty. This electoral victory gives us a strong platform to accelerate that mission,” he explained. “These councils will be used to revitalize the rural economy.”
Silva also promised a transformation in the behavior and purpose of local council members, saying the era of self-serving politics must come to an end.
“We’re working to redefine the role of local representatives to create a new type of councilor who serves both the village and the nation,” he said.
He underscored that these local institutions won’t just be symbolic they will play a central role in rolling out nationwide improvements in education, transport, health, and infrastructure. “All government plans will now be executed more efficiently through these councils,” Silva affirmed.
With local councils in place and a clear political directive from the top, the JVP leadership believes Sri Lanka is poised for serious transformation and this time, there are no more excuses.
