Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and National People’s Power MP L. M. Abeywickrama have been appointed as co-chairmen of the Parliamentary Forum on Climate for the 10th Parliament. This re-establishment of the forum marks a significant step in addressing climate change concerns at the national level.
The Department of Communications of Parliament confirmed that the first meeting of the newly formed forum took place on January 8. During the session, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Nalin Bandara and National People’s Power MP Asitha Niroshana Egodavithana were elected as deputy co-chairmen. Additionally, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne and National People’s Power MP Anushka Thilakaratne were appointed as co-conveners of the forum.
In their address, the Co-Chairs highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, stressing that Sri Lanka must adopt proactive measures to mitigate its impacts. They emphasized the importance of collaborative discussions within the forum to craft actionable strategies and policies to combat climate change and protect the country’s environment.
The forum aims to serve as a platform for legislators to engage in dialogue, formulate policy recommendations, and prioritize climate initiatives. This development aligns with growing global efforts to tackle climate challenges and underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable development.
