Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has acknowledged the significant challenges in ensuring a continuous supply of essential medicines to Sri Lanka’s hospital system and health sector. He urged the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation to take immediate measures to increase the production capacity of essential medicines.
During an inspection visit to the Sri Lanka State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) in Ratmalana, Dr. Jayatissa cited multiple reasons for the current medicine shortage, including the lack of reliable suppliers, tender-winning suppliers failing to maintain consistent supplies, and disruptions in the global supply network. Additionally, he noted that the non-registration of certain suppliers has further exacerbated the situation.
The Minister conducted a detailed review of issues surrounding the import of raw materials and instructed officials to address inefficiencies to enhance pharmaceutical production rapidly. He emphasized the strategic importance of the SPMC, Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest government-owned pharmaceutical manufacturing institution, as a provider of essential public services rather than solely a business entity.
Dr. Jayatissa outlined plans to expand the state pharmacy network, ensuring every city has access to affordable medicines. He engaged in discussions with the SPMC’s governing body to implement systematic and transparent operational practices to fulfill the institution’s vision, originally established with support from the Japanese government.
During his visit, the Minister inspected various aspects of the institution, including medicine production, raw material procurement, research activities, and distribution processes. He provided guidance on improving corporate social responsibility, laboratory facilities, pre-production activities, marketing, and human resource development.
Dr. Jayatissa also interacted with staff, discussing their challenges and concerns, and assured them of steps to address these issues. He highlighted the need for a collaborative effort to strengthen the institution’s role in overcoming the current medicine shortages.
The inspection was attended by SPMC Chairman Professor Jayantha Wijeyabandara, General Manager Asanthi Athuraliya, Deputy General Managers, and other staff members.
