The Indian government has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka following an incident in which a group of Indian fishermen was allegedly fired upon in the North Sea. The acting Sri Lankan High Commissioner in New Delhi was summoned by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to express their dissatisfaction.
According to Indian media reports, the government emphasized that issues concerning fishermen should be approached with a humanitarian perspective, taking into account their livelihoods. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the use of force under any circumstances and stressed the importance of adhering to bilateral understandings between the two countries on such matters.
The incident occurred near Delf Island, where 11 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. During the arrest, a naval soldier’s firearm reportedly discharged, injuring some of the fishermen. The injured individuals have been admitted to Jaffna Hospital for treatment.
The incident has heightened tensions between the two nations, with India calling for immediate measures to ensure such situations do not recur, while urging Sri Lanka to address fishermen-related issues with sensitivity and respect for mutual agreements.
