A controversy has emerged over allegations that a National People’s Power (NPP) Member of Parliament has unlawfully distributed government land to his associates. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Bandaragama Electoral Organizer, Nayanaka Ranwella, made this accusation, urging authorities to investigate the matter.
Speaking to the media, Ranwella claimed that a plot of land in the Polonnaruwa District, known as Weragoda Yaya, which had been legally acquired by the Department of Wildlife Conservation following a court ruling, has now been allocated to a select group of individuals linked to the MP.
“This land was officially taken under the protection of the Wildlife Department after a legal process. However, despite this ruling, the MP representing NPP in the area has taken steps to hand it over to his close associates,” Ranwella said.
He further stated that the National People’s Power, which came into government promising change, should not engage in practices similar to previous administrations.
“The public voted for NPP expecting a new era of governance, free from corruption and misuse of power. Yet, it appears that the same wrongful practices are being repeated under different guises. We urge President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to look into this matter and ensure accountability,” he added.
The allegations have sparked concerns over transparency and the management of state lands, with calls for an immediate probe into the legality of the allocations.
