Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf has strongly denied allegations linking him to the controversial release of 323 containers, which included several red-labeled shipments requiring strict inspection, from Sri Lanka Customs without proper checks. The Governor refuted claims that he was involved in any capacity in the release of these containers and dismissed speculation that they were connected to him or his business interests.
In response to reports suggesting a connection between the containers and Expo Lanka, Governor Yusuf clarified that he has no current affiliation with the company. He stated that he had officially resigned from all positions in Expo Lanka before assuming his duties as the Governor of the Western Province. Expressing disappointment over the accusations, he stated that such allegations were an attempt to tarnish his reputation and undermine his role in public service.
“I want to make it clear that I have no connection whatsoever to the release of these containers. I have completely distanced myself from all private business engagements since assuming the governorship. The accusations being made against me are baseless and politically motivated. It is disheartening to see my name being dragged into a controversy that I have no involvement in,” he said.
Governor Yusuf further emphasized that he was appointed to his position by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with the primary goal of serving the country. He stated that he accepted the role to contribute to the development of the Western Province and not for personal gain.
“I accepted the governorship solely at the request of the President to serve the people. My focus is on improving governance in the province, not engaging in business dealings. I urge those spreading falsehoods to act responsibly and not mislead the public for political or personal motives,” he added.
The controversy surrounding the release of 323 containers has sparked widespread debate, with opposition parties and civil society groups demanding an independent investigation into the incident. The containers in question were reportedly labeled for strict inspection due to concerns over the potential smuggling of contraband, including narcotics, weapons, and untaxed goods. However, they were released without undergoing the required scrutiny, raising serious concerns about accountability within the customs system.
The Governor reiterated his full support for any formal inquiry into the matter, stating that transparency must be upheld and that those responsible for any wrongdoing should be held accountable.
“If there is an investigation into this matter, I welcome it. The truth must come out, and those truly responsible should face consequences. I have nothing to hide, and I will fully cooperate with any inquiries,” Yusuf concluded.
Meanwhile, calls for a thorough probe continue to grow, with political analysts speculating on the possible involvement of influential business and political figures in the release of the containers. The government has yet to announce an official response regarding the next steps in the investigation.
