Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has attributed the team’s heavy defeat in Galle to reckless batting by the batsmen, stating that they failed to handle pressure and capitalize on good starts.
Speaking at the post-match press conference yesterday (01), Jayasuriya did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s poor performance, emphasizing that the batting collapse was avoidable.
“This wicket is not that difficult. These guys need to know how to take pressure. They need to understand how to bat with confidence. Test cricket is a unique game—there are different situations, and you need to control them by batting sensibly. We have a strong batting lineup, but we have to admit that we did not bat well.”
Jayasuriya stressed that the team must learn to convert starts into big scores, especially in the longer format of the game.
“If this was a really tough wicket, I would come here and say it’s difficult, that the bowlers were getting a lot of help. But the reality is, this wicket was not that dangerous. Our batters just didn’t apply themselves. I believe we will see a much better performance in the next Test.”
With the series still in progress, Sri Lanka will need to regroup and show significant improvement to bounce back in the next match.
