The 40th birthday of world-famous football star Cristiano Ronaldo was celebrated in Anuradhapura, marking the occasion with the establishment of a football club named after him. This initiative aims to provide football training and resources to school children in the Rajarata region, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The newly launched CR7 Football Club was founded under the leadership of Mrs. Anoja Basnayake, a Sri Lankan professional currently working in the same country where Ronaldo plays. The club’s goal is to promote football education and nurture young talent among children from less privileged schools in Anuradhapura.
The inaugural event took place at Pothanegama College, where a birthday cake was cut in honor of Ronaldo’s 40th birthday, and footballs along with other essential training equipment were distributed to selected children from the Anuradhapura area.
Ms. Anoja Basnayake, who had the opportunity to meet and take a selfie with Ronaldo during a sports match, has now taken a step further in contributing to Sri Lanka’s football development. With the support of several international organizations, she has spearheaded this initiative to train and mentor young footballers, ensuring they receive professional guidance from recognized football coaches in Sri Lanka.
This initiative is expected to provide new opportunities for aspiring footballers in rural areas, fostering talent and inspiring the next generation of Sri Lankan football stars.
