Three Russian female tourists were rescued from drowning by the Hikkaduwa Police Lifeguard Unit after being caught in strong currents while swimming at Hikkaduwa Beach on the evening of February 10, 2025.
The tourists, aged 33, 40, and 43, were struggling to stay afloat as they were swept away by the powerful current. Alert lifeguards and police officers quickly responded, pulling them safely back to shore before the situation worsened.
Authorities are now urging beachgoers, especially foreign tourists, to exercise caution when swimming in Sri Lanka’s coastal waters, as unfamiliarity with local sea conditions can lead to dangerous situations. Officials also emphasized the importance of following safety warnings and swimming only in designated safe areas.
