A Grama Niladhari in Kilinochchi has caused a major traffic disruption by blocking the Kilinochchi-Paranthan road with paddy sacks, allegedly misusing his authority. The incident left school children, government employees, and even an ambulance carrying a patient stranded for hours, according to frustrated residents of Kandawalai, Kilinochchi.
The disruption occurred when the Grama Niladhari was transporting freshly harvested paddy sacks to his home. While in transit, the sacks accidentally fell into a canal and got wet. In an attempt to dry them, he spread the wet paddy sacks across the main road, completely halting traffic.
For nearly three hours, vehicles were forced to take alternative routes, causing significant delays. Among the stranded vehicles was an ambulance transferring a patient to Kilinochchi Hospital, highlighting the severity of the inconvenience.
It was only after four hours that two police officers traveling on the highway intervened, scolding the Grama Niladhari for his actions. Following this, he ordered his employees to remove the paddy sacks from the road, finally allowing traffic to resume.
Residents of Kandawalai claim that this Grama Niladhari has a history of abusing his power and oppressing locals. Many have expressed frustration over his repeated misuse of authority, calling for strict action to prevent such incidents in the future.
