Minister of Science and Technology Krishantha Abeysena has stated that a national budget is not designed to directly reduce the prices of goods but rather to lay the foundation for a strong and stable economy. Speaking to the media after a public meeting in Wattala, the Minister emphasized that the 2025 budget will focus on long-term economic stability rather than short-term price reductions.
Addressing concerns about IMF conditions, he clarified that the government will not blindly follow IMF directives, but will instead negotiate and implement only those conditions that align with the country’s best interests. This statement comes amid growing public concern that IMF-backed economic policies could lead to increased taxes and a higher cost of living.
Minister Abeysena also expressed confidence in the upcoming local government elections, stating that the current government is poised for victory. He further remarked that there is no real opposition to compete against, reinforcing his belief that the government will maintain its stronghold in local governance.
His remarks highlight the government’s stance on economic policy, indicating that rather than focusing on immediate price reductions, the budget is structured to strengthen the economy, ensuring long-term growth and financial sustainability.
