Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has revealed that recent underworld activities in Sri Lanka are not isolated incidents, but rather coordinated operations led by a single organized group.
Speaking in Parliament in response to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Minister Wijepala assured that the government is closely monitoring the surge in organized crime and is taking decisive steps to identify and neutralize the perpetrators. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to national security, stressing that law and order will not be compromised under any circumstances.
“We are responsible for ensuring the safety of the public and protecting national security. We have observed that the recent rise in underworld activities is the work of a single criminal network operating across the country. This group is being identified, and necessary measures are being taken to dismantle their operations,” the minister stated.
He further confirmed that detailed investigations are currently underway into all recent shootings and gang-related crimes. Law enforcement agencies are conducting intelligence-driven operations to track down those involved, and authorities are working with security forces and the judiciary to ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.
Minister Wijepala also emphasized that the government is prepared to use every available resource to tackle organized crime, including enhanced surveillance, increased police presence, and legislative measures to strengthen law enforcement capabilities. He assured the public that swift action would be taken to curb the rising influence of the underworld, preventing further criminal activities that threaten peace and stability in the country.
