The Sri Lankan government has announced plans to invite expressions of interest (EOI) from the world’s top ten shipping companies next month to support the expansion of Colombo Port through the North Colombo Port Project and Phase II of the Western Container Terminal.
Deputy Minister of Ports and Aviation, Janitha Kodituwakku, stated that the Colombo Port currently operates with five terminal companies capable of handling containers. Plans are in place to expand the port infrastructure, including the development of new terminals, aiming to establish Colombo as a major maritime hub. The Kelani River area has been identified as a site for further expansion following the completion of the North Port development.
Kodituwakku emphasized the importance of attracting global investment for port expansion, stating that businesses are essential for a developed port. He confirmed that EOIs will be invited from the top ten shipping companies next month to provide financial assistance for these developments, following the completion of feasibility studies.
Regarding Hambantota Port, the Deputy Minister noted that excavation work is currently underway to deepen its breakwater by an additional meter as part of ongoing development efforts.
Meanwhile, Phase I of the Western Container Terminal is progressing, with the first cargo ship scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2025. The project is a joint development between India’s Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Ltd and Sri Lanka’s John Keells Holdings PLC, marking a key milestone in Sri Lanka’s port expansion strategy.
