
A female doctor working at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital has been raped in her official residence. The incident took place when she returned to her quarters yesterday afternoon, after completing her shift. The attacker allegedly threatened her with a knife before committing the crime.
In response, doctors at the Anuradhapura Hospital have launched a strike today, demanding the immediate arrest of the suspect.
Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wijepala, confirmed that the suspect is a deserter from the army and that five police teams have been deployed to track and apprehend him. According to the Minister, authorities have already identified the suspect’s location and are actively pursuing him.
Meanwhile, Minister of Health and Media, Nalinda Jayatissa, has urged all print and digital media to respect the privacy of the female doctor involved in the incident. The minister emphasized the importance of responsible reporting to protect the victim’s dignity and well-being.
