Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Court of Appeal has postponed its decision on the writ petition filed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon until March 17, as he seeks to suspend the arrest warrant issued against him by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
Tennakoon faces an arrest order in connection with the Weligama shooting incident that took place last year. His legal counsel, President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, argued that the magistrate’s order was issued in violation of legal procedures and without first obtaining a statement from his client.
However, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, representing the Attorney General’s Department, countered these claims. He stated that Tennakoon was directly involved in leading the Weligama hotel operation, which resulted in the shooting targeting the hotel owner. Peiris further urged the court to dismiss the petition, citing Tennakoon’s alleged suppression of key facts in the case.
With the court now set to deliver its ruling on March 17, Tennakoon remains in legal limbo as scrutiny over his involvement in the controversial incident continues.
