In a statement issued by the National Movement for a Just Society, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya praised the government’s launch of the National Action Plan against Corruption as a “significant and commendable” initiative aimed at eliminating one of Sri Lanka’s most deeply entrenched problems—bribery and corruption.
Jayasuriya highlighted the pivotal roles played by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Minister of Justice Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe in spearheading the initiative. He expressed hope that the plan would meet the expectations of the Sri Lankan public, who have long yearned for a corruption-free nation.
Reflecting on the historical roots of reform, he linked the current effort to the spirit of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, which was introduced in 2000 to promote good governance. He also honored the memory of civil society activists who fought tirelessly for justice and transparency, many of whom, he noted, are no longer with us.
Jayasuriya gave special recognition to Dr. Rajapakshe for his collaboration with civil society to pass critical anti-corruption legislation and bolster enforcement mechanisms. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the former Director General of the Bribery Commission.
The statement concluded with a strong message of support for the government’s ongoing efforts to establish a just and transparent society. The National Movement for a Just Society, under Jayasuriya’s leadership, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting these reforms and helping to build a Sri Lanka free from bribery and corruption.
