Facing intense criticism over a Rs. 72,000 plug base tender awarded to a high-profile businessman, the Sri Lankan government has defended its decision, urging critics to “bring better bids” instead of complaining. Minister Jayatissa’s fiery response throws the spotlight back on the country’s procurement process amid demands for greater transparency.
Government Defends Rs. 72,000 Plug Base Tender Amid Backlash; Says Anyone Can Compete If Cheaper
Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has addressed the growing controversy surrounding a tender allegedly awarded to a well-known businessman to purchase plug bases at the staggering rate of Rs. 72,000 per unit.
At the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Minister Jayatissa dismissed the outrage, stating that the government’s procurement process is transparent and open to all. He emphasized that any individual or business has the legal right to submit bids under the competitive tendering system.
“If someone can offer a lower price, they should come forward and compete. That is the purpose of the procurement framework,” he explained.
The Minister’s comments were a direct response to claims that the tender was unjustly awarded to a politically connected businessman at inflated prices. Critics have accused the government of enabling wasteful spending and cronyism through this deal.
However, Minister Jayatissa insisted that levelling accusations without participating in the tender process is pointless. “The system is open allegations from the sidelines hold no weight if you don’t take part in it,” he said firmly.
The statement comes amid rising public scrutiny over state contracts and spending, especially in the wake of Sri Lanka’s broader economic recovery efforts. Calls for greater fiscal discipline and accountability have intensified, and this incident has become symbolic of the larger issue of procurement reform.
The government maintains that its bidding process remains fair and compliant with guidelines and that the door is open to any supplier who can deliver at a better price.
