National People’s Power MP Nilanthi Kottachchi slammed the opposition in Parliament, saying their economic mismanagement and policy blunders deprived Sri Lankans of the ability to afford vehicles. She argued that if previous governments had ensured financial stability, today ordinary citizens would not be burdened with skyrocketing car prices.
Speaking in Parliament, Kottachchi said the opposition cannot simply retreat from responsibility while the public suffers. She pointed to the accusations made by MP Mujibur Rahman, who reminded the House that the government came to power with promises such as providing a Vitz car for Rs. 1.2 million. Instead, Rahman highlighted, crippling taxes have pushed prices to shocking levels, a WagonR now costs Rs. 9.6 million and an Alto Rs. 7.2 million.
Kottachchi countered that such unaffordability stems directly from the opposition’s past governance failures, which created deep financial instability in Sri Lanka. She said that had those governments managed the economy responsibly, people today would have the financial capacity to purchase vehicles without such crushing burdens.
The NPP MP further criticized the opposition for attempting to shift blame rather than admitting their role in worsening the crisis. She emphasized that correcting decades of poor governance is essential if ordinary citizens are ever to enjoy a fair chance at vehicle ownership and other basic aspirations.

If the monies she promised to bring back from Uganda is brought back, may be vehicles would be cheap !!
