Agriculture Minister K.D. Lal Kantha says Ranil Wickremesinghe remains legally innocent for now, but warns protesters and politicians that loose talk of ‘pre-written verdicts’ could backfire with contempt charges.
Agriculture Minister K.D. Lal Kantha weighed in on the arrest and remanding of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, stating that as of now he is not guilty of any offense. Lal Kantha explained that all public focus has shifted toward August 26, when the court is expected to either grant bail and continue with proceedings or push forward without granting bail.
The Minister stressed that he would not interfere with judicial matters, pointing out that such interference is both inappropriate and legally wrong. He also said even discussing the case prematurely is unwise.
Lal Kantha specifically warned against allegations that “the verdict was written in the Pelawatte office,” cautioning that if the judiciary takes such remarks seriously, contempt of court charges could easily follow. He urged protesters to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past by making careless and inflammatory statements.
Reiterating the importance of respecting judicial processes, he emphasized that Sri Lanka operates under the rule of law and that citizens, especially political actors, must carefully consider their words. According to him, restraint and responsible behavior would reflect positively on society and prevent unnecessary legal complications.
