Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri bluntly claims that Ranil Wickremesinghe’s arrest is less about justice and more about political theater, accusing the Attorney General’s Department of acting as the government’s backstage crew.
Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri has declared that the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is entirely political, stressing that the application of law against high-level dignitaries in Sri Lanka is always a matter of political choice rather than impartial justice.
Speaking through his online account, Dewasiri said there is no reason to hide the fact that the entire process has been politicized. He pointed out that the Attorney General’s Department is actively interfering with decisions on bail, turning what should be a judicial process into a government-controlled performance.
Dewasiri argued that without such political interference, the ongoing proceedings against the accused would not even exist. He emphasized that the government’s influence is woven into every stage of the case, from the arrest itself to the question of bail, making the entire process a textbook example of political manipulation.
According to Dewasiri, Ranil Wickremesinghe’s arrest is not simply a legal matter—it is a demonstration of how politics trumps the rule of law in Sri Lanka.
