(COLOMBO) – A Sri Lankan lawmaker was on Thursday barred from entering the Parliament after he was clad in an apron.
Opposition MP Shan Wijayalal de Silva had violated the standard procedures of Parliament attire and therefore he cannot be allowed into the House, Sergeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando said.
It was only the other day that the Speaker of the House, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana warned lawmakers that they face a one to three month suspension if they failed to respect the August Assembly either by attire or other means.
The Sri Lankan Parliament is notorious for fisticuffs, verbal abuse and violent behaviour, so much so that on occasions school children and others have to be evacuated from the public galleries to avoid embarrassment.
